I went for my first pap smear when I was sixteen. I can't remember what made me decide to go, except that my mother always had regular pap smears, so I guess it seemed a normal thing to do once I'd started having sex. I went to a male Doctor - I didn't really have my own doctor then. Even though the Doctor was quite old, and a man, it didn't hurt at all. It just felt a bit weird - really clinical and not at all like sex, (not even really bad sex). It was over very quickly and it wasn't as bad as I thought it might be. Before I went, I was more worried about the Doctor than the actual pap smear. As it was though, he waas fine and didn't make me feel embarassed too much.
